The search is on for West Virginia’s next head coach after Mountaineers’ athletic director, Wren Baker, made the decision to fire Neal Brown following a 52-15 loss to Texas Tech.
Brown served as the Mountaineers’ head coach from 2019 to 2024, putting together a 37-35 overall record and leading WVU to four bowl appearances in six seasons.
With Brown out, the Mountaineers are looking for the next man to lead a program with all kinds of pride and reason to believe they can be one of the premier programs in the Big 12.
Names like Ja’Jaun Seider and Rich Rodriguez are getting the most attention to this point, but there’s a name already in the Big 12 that says he’s taking a look at the job.
According to Mike Asti of WV Sports Now, Colorado senior defensive assistant George Helow is “very interested” in the job.
“A source close to Colorado Senior Defensive Assistant George Helow says he is very interested in the WVU head coach job,” Asti writes on X. “He would obviously be a long-shot type option, but is a young up-and-coming coach with experience working under Jim Harbaugh, Nick Saban and now Deion Sanders. He’s on track to eventually be a head coach somewhere at some point.
“I would imagine he would need to be a coordinator first before a program like WVU would seriously consider him.”
It’s probably not likely that Helow will land the job with more experienced candidates in the mix, but with a pedigree of work under Harbaugh, Saban, and now Sanders, it won’t be long before some takes a chance on him.
