Texas Tech Reportedly Set to Name Next Offensive Coordinator

NCAA Football: Montana State at Texas Tech

With Zach Kittley headed out the door to take the head coaching job at Florida Atlantic, the Texas Tech Red Raiders will be counting on a new face to call the plays in 2025.

Despite the vacancy only being there for a couple of days, TTU has identified and gotten their guy to lead the offense going forward.

According to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Red Raiders are set to hire Mack Leftwich, the offensive coordinator at Texas State, as their next offensive coordinator.

Leftwich is one of the brightest young play callers in college football and has made quite a name for himself by turning the Bobcats’ offense into one of the best units in the country.

But, he made a name for himself even before that, when he found a diamond in the rough to come and be the quarterback at Incarnate Ward back in the class of 2020. Ever heard the name Cam Ward? Well, most people hadn’t five years ago, but Leftwich identified his talents while coaching quarterbacks for the Cardinals.

Leftwich eventually became the OC at UIW under GJ Kinne, and when Kinne got the job at Texas State, Leftwich followed him to San Marcos.

In 2024, Texas State’s offense ranks 11th in scoring (37.1 ppg), 6th in total offense (474.3 ypg), 21st in yards per play (6.48), and sixth in plays of 10+ yards (207).

Because of this, Leftwich was one of the hottest names on the coordinator market this cycle. According to FootballScoop, he drew interest from at least four Big 12 programs.

Texas Tech has yet to make an official announcement on the Leftwich hire, but did announce its official hiring of Shiel Wood as the defensive coordinator on Wednesday.
