The West Virginia men’s basketball team gets set to take on the Georgetown Hoyas in Morgantown, WV, on Friday, December 6th, 2024.

The Mountaineers (5-2) have a signature win over a ranked team in Gonzaga and has even played a Big 12 team already, as they beat Arizona in a tournament last weekend that both had committed to before they were in the same conference.
Georgetown (7-1) is in the second year of its rebuild under coach Ed Cooley and it’s going a lot better than a year ago. Though, to be fair, the Hoyas have played just one power conference team (Notre Dame) and lost.

West Virginia vs. Georgetown Predictions
West Virginia is 3-0 at WVU Coliseum this season and all three of those wins were against mid-major teams. So the Hoyas are the first high-major team to pay the Mountaineers a visit. WVU has a 2-2 record against high-major teams so far, and Georgetown will be the fourth straight it has faced.
Something to note — each of WVU’s last three games have gone to overtime and it is 2-1 in those games, with the loss coming to Louisville. All three games were on a neutral site.
Guards Tucker DeVries and Javon Small have led the Mountaineers in scoring in all but one of their games. In each of the last four games one of them has scored more than 20 points.
Coach Darian DeVries reported that center Eduardo Andre is a game-time decision. The back-up center averages 13 minutes per game.
Georgetown has kept it cozy. The Hoyas haven’t played a road game yet. The Hoyas have feasted on mid-majors, but that 21-point loss to Notre Dame is a warning that Cooley’s reclamation project has a ways to go.
Forward Thomas Sorber leads the Hoyas in points (15.8) and rebounds (8.9). Former Big 12 star Micah Peavy (14.8 points, 4.1 assists) knows the ropes and can help the Hoyas acclimate to the craziness that can be WVU Coliseum.
I suspect this will go much like Georgetown’s first game against a high-major team — a loss. It won’t be by a 21-point margin like Notre Dame. But WVU is feeling great after wins over Gonzaga and Arizona and those tests should have them ready for this Big 12-Big EAST battle game.
