Mike Gundy Showing ‘Willingness to Compromise’ on Pay Cut From Oklahoma State

NCAA Football: Big 12 Media Days

As of Saturday morning, Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy is reportedly showing a “willingness to compromise” regarding a pay cut from the University to remain as the head coach. If he doesn’t, it’s been reported that Gundy would be fired by the University.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported on Saturday morning during College GameDay that while Gundy is still technically in a contract stand off with Oklahoma State University. Gundy makes $7.7 million per year and his buyout stands at $25 million.

Thamel reported, “I’ve been told Gundy has been shown a willingness to compromise,” regarding the pay cut. Here’s Thamel’s full report.

Oklahoma State football is coming off the worst season it’s ever experienced under Mike Gundy, as the 20th season under his watch ended in a nine-game losing streak.

The most recent loss, a 52-0 no-show at Colorado, was followed by an outcry from OSU fans for Mike Gundy’s removal. While it did end with both offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn and defensive coordinator Bryan Nardo, Gundy is still in charge of the program in Stillwater – for now.

At 57 years old, Gundy has been the head coach at his alma mater for the last 20 seasons and has a career record of 169-88 and 102-72 in Big 12 play. He’s a three-time Big 12 Football Coach of the Year, including two of the last four seasons (2011, 2021, and 2023).

This has been one of the most unexpected storylines to watch in recent weeks, as Oklahoma State was predicted to be a team that would compete atop the Big 12 Conference. And now, it’s resulted in a stand off between the greatest head coach in program history and his alma mater.
