Mike Gundy and the Oklahoma State Cowboys had a tumultuous couple of days, as the University reportedly gave Gundy an ultimatum to take a pay cut or get fired.
The two sides agreed on a new deal, as was reported on Saturday. But had things not worked out between the two sides, Oklahoma State was reportedly set to target another former Oklahoma State quarterback to take over for Gundy.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday morning that Oklahoma State would have targeted Falcons offensive coordinator and former OSU quarterback Zac Robinson to replace Gundy.
Robinson played at Oklahoma State from 2005 to 2009 and was a 7th round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. He had stints with the Patriots, Seahawks, Lions and Bengals from 2010 to 2013.
His professional coaching career began in 2019 with the LA Rams, and has since led to Robinson joining the Atlanta Falcons, where he has been the offensive coordinator for the 2024 season.
Mike Gundy Will Return
Oklahoma State football is coming off the worst season it’s ever experienced under Mike Gundy, as the 20th season under his watch ended in a nine-game losing streak and 3-9 overall record.
The most recent loss, a 52-0 no-show at Colorado, was followed by an outcry from OSU fans for Mike Gundy’s removal. While it did end with both offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn and defensive coordinator Bryan Nardo being shown the door, Gundy is still in charge of the program in Stillwater.
Oklahoma State made it official on Saturday afternoon.
At 57 years old, Gundy has been the head coach at his alma mater for the last 20 seasons and has a career record of 169-88 and 102-72 in Big 12 play. He’s a three-time Big 12 Football Coach of the Year, including two of the last four seasons (2011, 2021, and 2023).
