In the four-team era of the College Football Playoff, there was hardly ever a year when there wasn’t a runaway favorite to win the national championship. Whether it was Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, or any of the one-off juggernaut teams of the past 10 years, there was almost always a team you could point to as the odds-on bet to win it all.
In 2024, the first year of the 12-team field, the postseason has a different aura. With 12 teams in the mix, and not a single one of them invulnerable in some way, it feels like anybody could win this thing. Like we’ve seen in March Madness for years, a team that gets hot at the right time could just make a run and shock the world.
Perhaps that team is Arizona State, undoubtedly playing their best football heading into the playoffs. The Sun Devils are fresh off a dominant 45-19 win in the Big 12 Championship and looked like a team destined to make noise in the postseason.
According to senior running back Cam Skattebo, they will do just that.
“We’re talented. We play with each other. We love each other. I don’t see a team that can beat us, honestly,” Skattebo told ESPN.
It’s hard to argue that Arizona State isn’t one of the more dangerous teams in the field, especially with Skattebo playing to the level that he is.
Skattebo had 16 carries for 170 yards (10.6 ypc) and two rushing touchdowns, against Iowa State on Saturday, including two receptions for 38 yards and a score, earning him the honor of Big 12 Championship MVP.
On the year, Skattebo ranks second nationally with 2,074 yards from scrimmage and leads the Big 12 with 172.8 all-purpose yards per game.
The Sun Devils await the winner of No. 12 Clemson at No. 5 Texas in the Chick-Fil-a Peach Bowl on Wednesday, January 1 (ESPN).
