While reports of the West Virginia coaching search have largely focused on Rich Rodriguez and Andy Kotelnicki, on Monday, a new name entered the fray.
West Virginia alum and current head coach of the UFL’s St. Louis Battlehawks, Anthony Becht, interviewed for the job opening in Morgantown.
“Former NFL TE Anthony Becht, the current St. Louis Battlehawks head coach in the UFL, has interviewed for the West Virginia head coach position,” NFL insider Adam Schefter said. “Becht also has received inquiries about coaching at the NFL level.”
During his playing career at West Virginia, Becht was regarded as one of the best tight ends in school history. He finished his career with 83 catches for 1,173 yards and 10 touchdowns. In his senior season, Becht was named an Honorable Mention on the All-American team and Second Team All-Big East in back-to-back seasons.
In the past two years, Becht has spent time as the head coach in the UFL and the XFL, leading the St. Louis Battlehawks. During his time with the team, Becht led the group to a 14-6 record, with a first-place finish in the XFL Conference and a trip to the Conference Championship Game.
Becht is also the father of current Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht, which adds an interesting element on the plate of the Big 12 schedule-makers in 2025, with the possibility of the two facing off against one another.
