Bill Belichick Will Open Up His UNC Career vs. Big 12 Team

After 24 seasons as the New England Patriots' head coach, Bill Belichick is trying his hand as a TV analyst.

With Bill Belichick being named the head football coach of the UNC Tar Heels, the legendary head coach is going to be one of the most-watched people in the entire sport. And his career will open up on August 30th, 2025 against the TCU Horned Frogs.

This is eerily reminiscent of when TCU opened up its season against another former NFL legend, albeit a player, in Deion Sanders, who made his Colorado coaching debut against TCU in Week 1 of the 2023 college football season.

TCU was a heavy favorite in that game and Colorado would go on to shock the Horned Frogs 45-42, which got the Coach Prime hype train off and running in Boulder. While CU closed last season with a 4-8 record, Deion and the Buffaloes joined the Big 12 in 2024 and finished 9-3, including a 7-2 mark in the Big 12. The Buffaloes will now take on BYU in the Alamo Bowl.

As for Belichick, he embarks on something no one ever expected: his first-ever college football coaching gig.

According to multiple reports, Belichick took the job with the promise that North Carolina will increase its NIL package from $4 million to $20 million.

There are reportedly other stipulations as part of the deal, with Belichick bringing a “manifesto” to the Tar Heels and laying out his plan to overhaul the program, with NIL, along with the assistant coaching pool, playing a major role. Other rumors and reports suggest show that Belichick has made it clear that he wants his son, Steve Belichick — the defensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies — to be named the head coach in waiting.

While there’s still some more information to find out about the deal, Big 12 fans will be eager to see Belichick make his college football coaching debut when he opens up in Chapel Hill against Sonny Dykes and the TCU Horned Frogs.
