Rocco Becht Makes Announcement on Future at Iowa State

NCAA Football: Iowa State at West Virginia

Iowa State will retain quarterback Rocco Becht, who won’t be entering the transfer portal, according to Action Network‘s Brett McMurphy.

McMurphy cites Iowa State’s “loyalty and culture” under head coach Matt Campbell.

Becht just wrapped up his third season in Ames and second season as the starting quarterback. He finished with 3,235 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions, while completing 59% of his passes. He also rushed for 295 yards and seven scores.

The Cyclones reached the Big 12 Championship last week in Arlington, Texas, which they lost to the Arizona State Sun Devils 45-19. In that game, Becht went 21-35 for 214 yards, with two touchdowns to one interception.

Rocco Becht and the Cyclones are now set to play in the Pop-Tarts Bowl against the Miami Hurricanes. The game will take place on December 28th in Orlando, Florida and kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

Matt Campbell’s Tenure

Despite overtures from bigger college programs and even the NFL, Campbell has stayed loyal and built the culture Becht reportedly appreciates at Iowa State over nearly a decade. He just finished his ninth season with the Cyclones and reached his second Big 12 Championship Game in the last five seasons.

Overall, Campbell is 63-51 at Iowa State and 45-36 in Big 12 play.

This past season, Campbell became the winningest coach in Iowa State football history. The record-breaking win came in a 20-0 victory over Houston, which broke the previous record of 56 wins by Dan McCarney.

Campbell and the Cyclones began the year 4-0, which hasn’t been done at Iowa State since 2000. He is a three-time Big 12 football coach of the year in 2017, 2018 and 2020.
