The college football regular season is over, which means someone had to bring up the idea of conference expansion, right?!
Leave it to ESPN’s Paul Finebaum to stir it up a bit.
During The Paul Finebaum Show this week, a caller asked about the North Carolina Tar Heels. The TV and radio host went on to say that he views North Carolina as an appealing program. He believes North Carolina would be its top option if the SEC considered expansion.
“I think North Carolina could win,” Finebaum said. “They’re a very attractive program. Everyone knows what I’m about to say: if the SEC ever expanded, North Carolina would be No. 1 on the list.”
Finebaum has noted before reasons he thinks UNC could be attractive to the SEC. First, they are the leading university in North Carolina, and second, they have a strong reputation as an academic institution. He has previously said he thinks North Carolina would likely move independently, due to all the drama in the ACC.

But for now, UNC will move ahead with Bill Belichick as their head coach.
And with Belichick being named the head football coach of the UNC Tar Heels, the legendary head coach is going to be one of the most-watched people in the entire sport. And his career will open up on August 30th, 2025 against the TCU Horned Frogs.
There’s no doubt it will be one of the most-watch games of Week 1 of the 2025 college football season, which is reminiscent of when TCU hosted Colorado in Week 1 of 2023 in Deion Sanders’ debut as head coach of the Buffaloes. TCU will be hoping for a different result, as the Horned Frogs lost that game as a big favorite 45-42.
