Utah quarterback Isaac Wilson announced on Monday night he would be returning to the Utes for the 2025 season. This came days after he entered his name into the transfer portal.
But, Wilson is returning and used the caption, “Let’s run it back.”
The move gives the Utes four quarterbacks in the room ahead of the 2025 season. Wilson joins one of the best transfer portal quarterbacks, Devon Dampier, who recently joined the Utes, along with true freshmen Wyatt Becker and Jamarian Fickli. The Utes lost two others to the transfer portal in Brandon Rose and Sam Huard.
It’s fine that Wilson is returning to the Utes, but it’s unclear what he was looking for? A payday? A better chance to start?
“Got to sit down on Friday with coach Jason Beck and coach Koy Detmer and go over the offense,” Wilson told 247Sports’ Blair Angulo. “It’s a lot more of what I did in high school and I’m very excited to compete and to see what I can do in it. They’ve had a lot of success with quarterbacks in the past.”
Wilson didn’t exactly light it up last season when he replaced Cam Rising. He threw for 1,510 yards and 10 touchdowns with 11 interceptions on 56.4% accuracy in 2024.
Utah’s offense was the weak link on the team as the Utes averaged only 23.6 points per game (14th in the Big 12), passed for just 199.4 yards per game (15th in the Big 12) and rushed for 130.4 yards per game (12th in the Big 12).
There’s no problem with Wilson testing the waters and exploring his options. But the “Utah Man Am I!” caption in the X post feels awfully disingenuous. Granted, that’s largely college football in 2024, but let’s all at least acknowledge that, rather than acting like players are genuinely playing for the name on the front of the jersey.
Is Wilson a “Utah Man” by choice? Or is he is “Utah Man” due to lack of other opportunities? Only he knows. And maybe the Utah staff.
