Washington State quarterback John Mateer, the top overall player in the 2025 transfer portal cycle, entered his name into the database on Monday afternoon and appears to have a pretty good idea of where he’s headed next.
Mateer took over as the starter in Pullman in 2024 and put together a breakout season, throwing for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns while completing 65% of his passes, adding 827 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns on the ground. He ended the regular season ranked fifth in total offense (330.4 ypg) and leads the country with 44 total touchdowns.
The moment he entered the portal on Monday, Mateer became the most sought-after transfer target in college football, but he’s likely already down to two schools, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.
Oklahoma appears to be in the best position to land Mateer’s services, as the Sooners hired his offensive coordinator (Ben Arbuckle) and quarterbacks coach (John Kuceyeski) in recent weeks. Plus, when you consider that Mateer played high school football just a few hours from Norman in Little Axe, Texas, it seems like a no-brainer.
However, things won’t come so easily for the Sooners, that is, if Miami can do anything about it.
The Hurricanes have more than money going for them, too. Miami superstar quarterback Cam Ward transferred in from Wazzu this past offseason and is close with Mateer after they spent a couple of seasons together in Pullman.
If Miami can put together a Godfather-esque NIL offer and get their current star to convince his successor to follow in his footsteps, it would give them a bonafide stud at quarterback for a couple more seasons.
