On Tuesday evening, Sonny Dykes and the TCU Horned Frogs lost their starting running back to the transfer portal.

That player is sophomore back Cam Cook, who led the team in carries, yards, and touchdowns this fall.

In 2024, Cook recorded 119 carries for 460 yards and nine touchdowns. He spent the first two years of his college career in Ft. Worth, recording 16 carries for 58 yards as a true freshman in 2023.

Coming out of Stony Point High School in the Class of 2023, Cook was listed as a four-star prospect by the 247Sports index and the nation’s 346th-ranked player. He also checked in as the 19th-ranked player at his position and the 59th-ranked player in the state of Texas.

Cook became the second running back to hit the portal for TCU this offseason, with junior running back Dominique Johnson electing to depart the program. The group’s depth will be tested mightily in the next few weeks, with the team down to their backup running backs in the New Mexico Bowl vs. Louisiana.

With the absence of Cook and Johnson, TCU is down to some combination of Trey Sanders, Nate Palmer, Trent Battle, Derrick Carroll, Jeremy Payne, Brant Ahlfinger, Franklin Estrada, and Joe Pitchford, four of which have less than five carries on the year.
