West Virginia Football Loses Three-Year Starter to Transfer Portal

NCAA Football: Big 12 Football Media Days

On Wednesday, the first major loss of the Rich Rodriguez era at West Virginia occurred, with the team losing a three-year starter to the transfer portal.

That player is starting offensive lineman Tomas Rimac, who earned a spot on the All-Big 12 Honorable Mention team this fall.

“West Virginia’s Tomas Rimac, a three-year starter at guard, told ESPN that he’s entering the NCAA transfer portal,” Pete Thamel wrote. “Rimac is a redshirt junior with one year remaining who earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors this year. He’s started 28 career games.”

Coming out of Brunswick High School in the Class of 2021, Rimac was listed as a three-star prospect by the 247Sports index and the nation’s 776th-ranked player. He also checked in as the 43rd-ranked player at his position and the 18th-ranked player in the state of Ohio.

“Has a prototypical frame and in the course of a year, has gone from 240 pounds to 270 to now 290,” 247Sports’ Allen Trieu wrote. “Two-way player who was recruited by some schools on defense. Coordinated player with good strength and is an excellent thrower in track and field. He plays with intensity and, when combined with that strength, allows him to maul in the run game. Needs more experience in pass pro against elite edge rushers. Good, solid all-around athlete but can still get more explosive and quick. The upside is high, though, based on recent growth and multi-sport background. Projects safely as a Power Five starter with a higher upside as a potential draft choice.”
