Deion Sanders and Colorado Propose Interesting Wrinkle to Bowl Game

Oct 7, 2023; Tempe, Arizona, USA; Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders walks the sidelines as his team takes on the ASU Sun Devils at Mountain America Stadium.

Ahead of Colorado’s matchup with BYU in the Alamo Bowl, head coach Deion Sanders made an interesting stance on his NFL-bound stars.

Players like Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter, and many more with NFL aspirations have elected to take the field in the bowl game, risking their future draft stock with potential injuries on the horizon.

Sanders proposed the idea that his future NFL athletes deserve protection in the event they participate in bowl games.

“We have a multitude of players that are draftable and have received draft grades,” Sanders said. “They had insurance all season long, and we want to make sure that if something were to happen, they would cover it. We happen to have two players who are probably going to be the first two picks of the NFL Draft. We all know who those two are, and they have received, I think, the highest amount of coverage that has ever been covered in college football. It far exceeds anyone that has ever played this game of college football.”

The concept of insuring players in their final season of college football makes a lot of sense at face value. With the modern era of the transfer portal, players have been opting out of bowl games at an alarming rate. With Sanders’ solution, athletes will likely follow in the footsteps of Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders as they play their final game before departing for the NFL.

“It was his idea we should get disability insurance for our athletes for this game to ensure that they played and if there was some kind of injury that they would be well taken care of,” Colorado AD Rick George said. “So, we worked together on that. We’re excited about it. We think it’s great that all our players are playing in the game. That’s what all bowl games should be like.”

Colorado kicks off their matchup vs. BYU on Saturday, December 28th in the Alamo Bowl.
