Ahead of Kansas State’s matchup vs. Rutgers in the Rate Bowl, sophomore quarterback Avery Johnson detailed his thoughts on remaining at Kansas State.
The question caught him off guard, almost as if there was no thought to entering the transfer portal and departing the Wildcats this offseason.
“What do you mean?” Johnson asked. “Like at K-State? Oh, uh. I mean, this is just home to me. I think it has to go to fan support; these people at K-State care about me and believe in me. They really rally around guys, and being a Kansas kid, I still feel like there’s stuff left to prove here.”
While Johnson’s team finished 8-4 after being picked to finish second in the league, the sophomore star had some incredible moments in his first season as a starter. Heading into the Rate Bowl, Johnson is two passing touchdowns away from tying the single-season passing touchdowns record at K-State and three away from breaking the record split by Will Howard and Ell Roberson.
“I think we can be a really talented team and be Big 12 Champions,” Johnson continued. “In the future, I feel like we can play for a Big 12 Championship, win it, and play in a College Football Playoff, so it’s just a lot of unfinished business at K-State.”
Johnson finished his thoughts by shouting out his support system, saying, “Really just the people, the coaches, strength staffs, all the support staff. They really teach you and mold you into a better man. This is just the place I want to be.”
