After three seasons as the head coach in Norman, college football fans worldwide have begun to wonder about Brent Venables‘ contract buyout.
In 2024, Venables led the team to the Armed Forces Bowl, where they were defeated by Navy, dropping the Sooners to 6-7.
If Oklahoma were to fire Venbles today, his buyout would be a whopping $44.8 million. If fired in 2025, Venables’ buyout drops to $35 million.
In the first year of the Brent Venables era, the Sooners finished 6-7 overall and 3-6 in Big 12 Conference play. The team matched their 2024 record with a loss to Florida State in the Cheez-It Bowl. 2023 was a much-needed change for Venables, as the team finished near the top of the Big 12 with a 10-3 record.
In 2024, the Sooners moved to the SEC, where they struggled mightily. Oklahoma dropped games to No. 7 Tennessee, No. 3 Texas, No. 15 South Carolina, No. 14 Ole Miss, No. 19 Missouri, LSU, and Navy.
In three seasons at Oklahoma, Venables is 22-17 overall, 12-14 in conference play, and 0-3 in bowl games. He also holds a 2-12 record vs. Top 30 teams, 9-16 vs. Top 45 teams, 5-9 in one-score game, and has five losses of 20+ points.
