While declaring for the NFL Draft can generate a mixed bag of responses among those in the world of college sports, Georgia quarterback Carson Beck may have stirred the pot more than originally intended.
That was at least the case for one anonymous NFL Scout, who spoke with analyst Todd McShay, calling Beck’s decision “Foolish.”
“Carson Beck made a bad decision to leave early,” McShay said. “I texted a bunch of guys in the league, including GMs, former GMs, and scouts. One Scout wrote back to me, and the answer was one word — ‘foolish.’ I thought he got better late in the season, as I said, but I don’t think he’s there yet.”
While being the starting quarterback at the University of Georgia definitely has its perks, Beck’s numbers left a lot to be desired. In 2023, Beck finished the year on a high note with more than 3,900 yards, a 24-6 touchdown to interception ratio, and a completion percentage of 72.4. His numbers dropped off considerably this fall, with 3,485 yards, double the previous year’s interception count (12) and a completion percentage 7.7% lower than his junior year.
McShay concluded his thoughts, saying, “Why wouldn’t you take time and rehab in the off-season, come back with a better supporting cast? They’ve got a lot of young wide receivers. I know they’ve recruited well at wide receiver. From what I can tell, their offensive line will be better. They’ll be more balanced.”
After sustaining an injury near the end of the season, Beck’s stock took another sizeable hit as he now has to overcome an injury ahead of his rookie season. NFLDraftBuzz has Beck listed as the fifth-best quarterback in his class, behind Shedeur Sanders, Cam Ward, Jalen Milroe, and Quinn Ewers.
