Texas is getting set to face Arizona State in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, with a spot in the College Football Playoff semifinals on the line, and they’ll do so with Quinn Ewers as the starting quarterback.
Ewers is one of the most recognizable players in the country, but he’s struggled to live up to the hype created by his status as one of the highest-rated recruits in high school football history.
Plus, he’s the incumbent starter in a quarterback room that has Arch Manning — also among the highest-rated players in recruiting history — right behind him.
Ewers hasn’t been able to put together a Heisman-worthy campaign like most fans in Austin came to expect, but instead has struggled to reach “elite” status as a college quarterback.
While he began the season as a virtual lock to enter the 2025 NFL Draft, there’s a growing opinion that he will return for another season of college football, and it probably won’t be with the Longhorns.
That possibility has made him a hot commodity in the transfer portal market, even if he’s not technically available. According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Ewers has received an offer of $6 million to enter the transfer portal, and with teams like Miami, Oregon, and Ohio State all set to lose their starters this season, he’d likely be able to name his price for a single season of college football.
However, a former teammate of Ewers isn’t exactly buying the hype. Johntay Cook, who transferred from Texas to Washington earlier this month, doesn’t believe Ewers is worth that kind of money. He replied to On3’s report of the $6 million offer with: “wasting yall money fr”…

During two seasons with the Longhorns, Ewers and Cook connected just 16 times for 273 yards and two touchdowns, with eight catches in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
A former five-star prospect himself, Cook failed to live up to the hype in Austin, so one would think that he can relate to Ewers’s situation instead of going online to roast his former teammate.
