Oklahoma doesn’t have the biggest transfer class, and by volume, it would appear that the Sooners have lost more overall talent in this portal cycle than they’ve gained.
They’ll be considered one of the biggest winners of the cycle regardless, however, thanks to their addition of Washington State transfer quarterback John Mateer.
Mateer is the top overall player in this portal cycle according to all the major recruiting sites and immediately becomes the most intriguing quarterback in the SEC.
During his first season as a starter, Mateer racked up nearly 4,000 yards of offense, and 44 touchdowns for Wazzu, and much of his success came as a runner. Before he committed to the Sooners, legendary Sooner linebacker Brian Bosworth is very impressed with Mateer’s athleticism, comparing his ability to stop and move laterally to an NFL and College Football Hall of Famer.
“[John Mateer] is brave in the pocket. When he wants to run, he is fleet of foot; he is super athletic,” Bosworth said of Mateer. “He reminds me a little bit of Barry Sanders, where he stops and goes lateral and it doesn’t take much to get him to go vertical, back down north and south with a lit of speed and acceleration. He’s a dynamic quarterback.”
Mateer is incredibly athletic and has drawn several comparisons to Baker Mayfield, but Barry Sanders feels like it might be a bit of a stretch. After all, Sanders is widely considered the best running back of all time.
