If you’ve been around college football for any time, you know the power home-field advantage can have in a big game.
Many times, the home team having the crowd at their back can be the difference in a game. Unfortunately, the advantage that it provides to the home team isn’t easily quantifiable, and outside of getting three points from Las Vegas, there’s not much data to go off of.
That is until we developed a way to rank the Big 12 venues ahead of the 2025 season to determine which program will have the best home-field advantage for this season. Let’s take a look.
How We Determined Homefield Advantage Rankings
There’s no proven way to determine a score for home-field advantage, but after analyzing several historical factors, recent outcomes, and projected team strength going into next season, we came up with a scale and algorithm that provides a score for each team.
It’s important to note that while the score for each team might look similar from season to season, this particular ranking and score only applies to the 2025 season and can be adjusted as we fine-tune the algorithm.
2025 Home Field Advantage Rankings
1. BYU Cougars | LaVell Edwards Stadium
Total Score: 98.26
With one of the best home-winning percentages in the nation over the last five years, the largest capacity in the Big 12, and one of teams returning several key starters on both sides, going into Provo and beating BYU will be as tough a task as any in the conference next season.
2. Kansas State | Bill Snyder Family Stadium
Total Score: 95.16
With recent home success that rivals anyone in the country, K-State enjoys playing in front of an electric crowd at Bill Snyder Family Stadium and certainly feeds off the energy, too. The Wildcats are 16-4 at home over the past three seasons and when Wabash Cannonball starts playing, all bets are off.
3. Utah Utes | Rice Eccles Stadium
Total Score: 89.60
While Utah’s 2-4 record at home last season might have people doubting the power of Rice Eccles Stadium, something tells me that’s going to change in 2025. The Utes have been nightmare fuel at home over the past 10 season, going 48-13 (.787) over that spn and winning games by an average margin of over two touchdowns. Doubt them at your own risk, but Utah is a team that might be rising on this list pretty soon.
4. Texas Tech Red Raiders | Jones AT&T Stadium
Total Score: 85.45
Night football games in Lubbock, Texas, are one-of-a-kind, and Red Raider fans are among the most passionate in the country. That combined with a truly West Texas vibe—complete with tossed tortillas—makes it an unforgettable experience. Plus, Texas Tech is a handful at home, especially under Joey McGuire, as TTU is 15-5 at home since 2022.
5. Colorado Buffaloes | Folsom Field
Total Score: 85.29
There’s been just one good season of football in Boulder, Colorado as of late, but it was incredible. The Buffs were 5-1 at home in 2024, and if not for a heroic performance from K-State to hold on for the win, they would’ve been undefeated. Nobody packed their stadium like Colorado last season, with an average of over 104% capacity. When Boulder is rocking, there are few places in the Big 12 that are harder to handle.
