According to a report from 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz, the Texas Longhorns are looking to add a former West Virginia head coach to their staff ahead of the 2025 season.
The report, which surfaced just before 11:00 a.m. CT on Monday, was corroborated by On3’s Pete Nakos, giving us two of the biggest names in the industry pointing to the former Big 12 program acquiring the former Big 12 head coach.
The role that Neal would serve for the Longhorns is undetermined at this time, but his experience as a head coach at both West Virginia and Troy would serve him well in an assistant or analyst role under Steve Sarkisian.
Texas will likely enter the 2025 season as one of the favorites to win a national title, with Arch Manning taking over as the starting quarterback and being surrounded by one of the best collections of skill talent in the country. Meanwhile, the Longhorns will return a majority of its production on defense and have several budding stars on that side of the ball.
Brown was the head coach in Morgantown from 2019-24 and was 37-35 in his six seasons at the helm. He led the Mountaineers to four bowl games, with his best season coming in 2023, with a 9-4 finish and a win over North Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
Prior to his time with WVU, Brown was the head coach for the Troy Trojans. After a 4-8 campaign in his first year, Brown produced three consecutive seasons with 10+ wins, and a 3-0 record in bowl games.
He was dismissed at the conclusion of the 2024 regular season after suffering a 52-15 loss at Texas Tech on November 30.
