In what might be the most fitting modern football storyline of the year, we have a good, old-fashioned contract standoff between a quarterback and his team ahead of the upcoming season.
Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava is reportedly in active contract negotiations with the Volunteers and, just ahead of the spring transfer portal window, it’s got tensions in Knoxville starting to rise.
The initial report from On3’s Pete Nakos says that it’s currently unclear if the negotiations will impact whether he enters the spring transfer portal, but if so, it could be the biggest storyline of this cycle.
Iamaleava is entering his sophomore season and spent his entire freshman year as the starter in Knoxville in 2024.
Over 13 games, Iamaleava threw for 2,616 yards and 19 touchdowns with five interceptions, adding 358 yards and three scores on the ground.
The Volunteers finished the 2024 season with a 10-3 record and a third-place finish in the SEC. They’ll open the 2025 season against Syracuse on August 30, 2025.
