In a shocking turn of events for Jerome Tang and the Kansas State Wildcats, junior guard Dug McDaniel has elected to enter his name into the transfer portal.
McDaniel, a 5-foot-11 point guard from Washington, DC, spent the past season in Manhattan, Kansas, after starting his career with the Michigan Wolverines.
In 2024-25, McDaniel was the Wildcats’ best backcourt player, posting 11.4 points, 4.9 assists, and 2.8 rebounds per game. He played in 32 games for Jerome Tang’s squad, averaging 32.3 minutes per game.
McDaniel joined the Wildcats as one of the biggest names of the offseason, expected to give the Wildcats a big boost. Early on in the non-conference schedule, the DC native was coming off the bench and clashing heads with his coaching staff, which led to rumors of McDaniel departing the team.
In the end, that did eventually come to fruition with Tang now needing to find a fourth starting point guard in four seasons, following Markquis Nowell, Tylor Perry, and now Dug McDaniel.
The transfer portal officially opened on Monday, March 24, 2025. According to NCAA data, 1,296 FBS basketball players entered the transfer portal in the 2023-24 school year, with 864 (66.7%) undergraduates and 432 (33.3%) graduate transfers. Of the entrants, 70% reported that they enrolled in another school, 6% withdrew their names from the portal, and 23% are still active, transferred to a non-NCAA school, or left their sport.
