While Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule hasn’t maintained a professional relationship with those affiliated with the Big 12 since leaving Baylor, he has continued to try to stay involved by trashing the league.
At a recent press conference discussing Nebraska’s recruiting approach, Rhule took a massive shot at the Big 12, pushing the SEC and the Big Ten’s alleged “dominance” over the sport.
“There are lots of kids I would love to recruit that have committed to a Big 12 school or somewhere else like that, come to camp,” Rhule said. “If you want to play in the Big 12 over the Big Ten, I got it, but make no mistake, there’s a big difference.”
While Rhule woke up and chose violence when discussing the Big 12, his time at Nebraska doesn’t exactly spell success for elite recruits either. In his two years with the program, Rhule is just 12-13 overall and 6-12 in conference play.
To go one step further, Rhule’s time as a head coach anywhere hasn’t been very special, as the veteran coach is just three games above .500 (59-56) across stops at Temple, Baylor, and Nebraska. He’s finished in the Top 25 just once in nine seasons, with 2019 Baylor reaching the Sugar Bowl.
“The Big 12 is gonna go nuts now, I know that,” Rhule continued. “I’m gonna be on X and all that stuff, but it’s the reality. The Big Ten and the SEC, especially moving forward, are going to be here [higher] than everyone else.”
Rhule will have an opportunity to back up his claims early in 2025, with the season opener coming against Scott Satterfield and the Cincinnati Bearcats on Thursday, August 28th.
