Big 12 baseball is in full swing, as we just wrapped up another great weekend of conference play. Last week, we had a major shakeup in the power rankings, and this week, things were no different! So, without further ado, here are my Big 12 baseball power rankings for the week!
#1 West Virginia (Last Week: 1)
The Mountaineers stay at the top of my Big 12 power rankings after a sweep over Cincinnati in Morgantown. West Virginia’s pitching staff was outstanding during this series, and when you consider the fact that Cincinnati was playing well prior to this weekend, I came away extremely impressed with the Mountaineers once again.
#2 Arizona (Last Week: 2)
After Thursday’s loss to BYU, I was worried about Arizona. However, they responded by winning back-to-back close games to take the series. I really like the way this team is playing right now, and it looks like they are postseason-ready.
#3 Kansas (Last Week: 4)
Anytime you can sweep a Big 12 opponent, that is big, but to do it against your in-state rival in Kansas State is very impressive in my book. I know Kansas was number one on this list at one point, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them back on top sooner rather than later.
#4 Arizona State (Last Week: 5)
The Sun Devils had a chance to sweep Texas Tech this past weekend, but couldn’t quite pull it off. This team has plenty left in the tank, and I feel confident when I say that they will make the postseason in year one in this conference.
#5 TCU (Last Week: 3)
I can’t quite put my finger on this team this season. One week, they look like one of the best teams in the Big 12, and the next, they look like a bottom-tier team. This past weekend, they looked like they didn’t belong. After taking game one against UCF, the Horned Frogs put up a combined three runs in the final two games of the series and lost both of them.
#6 Oklahoma State (Last Week: 6)
The Cowboys only played two games this weekend due to some weather issues in Stillwater. They ended up splitting the two-game series against Houston. I didn’t see enough from them to move them down or move them up this weekend.
#7 Baylor (Last Week: 11)
Much like some other teams on the list, I have been waiting for Baylor to come up with a series win, and they did just that against Utah. Consistency has been an issue for this team, but it was nice to see them back in the win column.
#8 UCF (Last Week: 12)
Finally! UCF got a series win! It seems like forever since I said that, but beating TCU was hopefully the push this team needs to get things turned around.
#9 Houston (Last Week: 10)
Splitting a series against Oklahoma State on the road isn’t bad, but I would have rather seen this Houston team get one more crack at the Cowboys, but due to some weather issues, they didn’t get that opportunity.
#10 Kansas State (Last Week: 7)
I was skeptical about Kansas State, and it turned out that I was right. The Wildcats were absolutely dominated by their in-state rival, Kansas, this past weekend as they were swept in their three-game series. Ouch.
#11 Texas Tech (Last Week: 9)
If not for a Saturday win, the Red Raiders would have been swept. I feel like I have been waiting for this team to click and put it all together this year, and it just hasn’t happened yet. Time is not on this team’s side right now.
#12 Cincinnati (Last Week: 8)
Just last week, I was talking about Cincinnati turning a corner, and they followed that up by getting swept against West Virginia. I guess if you were to get swept by someone, at least it was by the number one team in my power ranking.
#13 Utah (Last Week: 13)
No changes for Utah here after losing two out of three to Baylor in Waco. It’s been a rough few weekends for the Utes after a strong start to the season in non-conference play. Welcome to the Big 12, Utah.
#14 BYU (Last Week: 14)
While the Cougars did give Arizona a scare on Thursday night, they weren’t able to follow that game with win to clinch the series. Despite the loss, I thought BYU showed some fight, which is something I haven’t seen a lot of from this team.
