It took a few tries, but Oklahoma has finally landed the portal wideout it was looking for in the spring window. According to 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz McNeese State wide receiver Jer’Micahel Carter pledged with OU, choosing the Sooners over programs like Baylor, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee.
Listed at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, Carter was one of the top uncommitted players in the portal and brings much-needed depth to a room that’s been plagued by injury.
A Louisiana native, Carter graduated from Kentwood High School and spent two seasons with the Cowboys. His first year was modest, as Carter appeared in four games and caught three balls for 56 yards.
However, Carter’s production exploded during his sophomore season, as he registered at least one catch in all 12 games, finishing with a total of 37 receptions for 537 yards and three touchdowns.
His best single-game performance was a five-catch, 108-yard performance against Houston Christian, and also closed out his season with a big-time performance against Lamar, logging six catches for 77 yards and a score.
Carter’s size and speed are a welcome addition to the Sooners’ wide receiver room, especially after transfer standout Javonnie Gibson suffered a broken leg near the end of spring activities.
“(Gibson) got rolled up on in practice, unfortunately,” Brent Venables said. “Again, if he just stays on schedule, he’ll be back to start the season and be back with us. Similar injury to Kendel Dolby. Not quite as severe.”
Carter will join a room with Gibson, plus incumbent starters in Jayden Gibson and Deion Burks, both of whom missed all or most of the season last year. The Sooners also added Arkansas transfer Isaiah Sategna, as well as standout freshmen Elijah Thomas and Manny Choice.
The competition for reps will be stiff, but with John Mateer at the controls, there should be plenty of opportunities for Oklahoma wideouts to make a name for themselves.
