It’s May in the Big 12, and things are getting serious on the diamond. With just a week left in the regular season, the pressure is ramping up—and so is the chaos.
Teams are jockeying for postseason position, title hopes are tightening, and this weekend brought another round of shakeups. From statement sweeps to brutal setbacks, the conference picture once again looks different.
Here’s how the Big 12 stacks up heading into the home stretch.
1. Arizona State (Last Week: 2)
I said weeks ago that Arizona State would climb back to the top before the regular season was over, and after a solid win over Houston, the Sun Devils are back at number one. Welcome back, Sun Devils!
2. Kansas State (Last Week: 4)
The Wildcats are in the hunt for a regional, and they made a loud statement this past weekend by taking down West Virginia at home. This team has been heating up, and they’re playing some of their best baseball right now.
3. West Virginia (Last Week: 1)
It was quite the run at the top for West Virginia, as they spent a few weeks at number one. But they finally dropped their first series in what feels like forever this past weekend with a loss to Kansas State. Still, there’s plenty ahead for this team.
4. Kansas (Last Week: 7)
The Jayhawks are back in the top five after a nice win over BYU. And I think it’s safe to say this team will be back in a regional for the first time in over ten years. But the work isn’t done yet!
5. Oklahoma State (Last Week: 5)
I kept the Cowboys at five after they beat Baylor this past weekend. With a 12–12 record in conference play, Oklahoma State needs to finish strong and have a good showing in the Big 12 Tournament to get to a regional.
6. TCU (Last Week: 9)
This team has had some tough moments this season, but when they’re firing on all cylinders, they’re one of the best in the Big 12. They took down a hot Cincinnati team this past weekend and are now a lock to make a regional.
7. Arizona (Last Week: 3)
The Wildcats spent most of the season in the top five, but they’ve finally slipped a bit after an ugly series loss to Utah. While they may be out of the top five, they’re still a near lock to make the postseason.
8. Cincinnati (Last Week: 6)
This team was trending in the right direction for a couple of weeks, but they’ve now fallen back after losing to TCU. They’re right on the postseason bubble, and that upcoming series against Kansas State is going to be huge.
9. UCF (Last Week: 12)
UCF finally won a series—and it was a big one against Texas Tech. Unfortunately, their season is about to end, because there’s zero chance this team makes the postseason.
10. Houston (Last Week: 8)
The Cougars gave Arizona State all they could handle this past weekend but came up short on Sunday. While they’ve made progress from last season, they still need a little help to take the next step.
11. Texas Tech (Last Week: 10)
Time may have run out on the Red Raiders after dropping a series to UCF. Tech now sits at 12–15 in Big 12 play and will likely need to sweep BYU next weekend to have a shot at a regional—outside of winning the Big 12 Tournament.
12. Utah (Last Week: 14)
The good news? Utah is no longer in last after taking down Arizona. The bad news? The Utes are still 7–20 in conference play.
13. Baylor (Last Week: 11)
This team was once respectable, but they’ve completely fallen flat as the season’s gone on. If not for some late-game heroics on Sunday, Oklahoma State would’ve swept them.
14. BYU (Last Week: 13)
The Cougars are back in the basement after losing to Kansas. BYU is now 8–19 in conference play, and the only silver lining is that their season is almost over.
