Norman Super Regional Preview: Can Oklahoma Get Revenge Against Alabama?

Oklahoma starting pitcher Sam Landry (21) celebrates after the final out of the first inning of a softball game in the Norman Regional of the NCAA Tournament between the University of Oklahoma Sooners (OU) and the California Golden Bears at Love's Field in Norman, Okla., Sunday, May 18, 2025.

Oklahoma is back in familiar territory—hosting a Super Regional with a trip to Oklahoma City on the line.

After sweeping through the Norman Regional, the Sooners are two wins away from their eighth consecutive Women’s College World Series appearance. But standing in their way is an Alabama team that’s heating up at the right time and knows how to win in the postseason.

Let’s break down the numbers and matchups ahead of this high-stakes battle in Norman.

Now, let’s take a closer look at the statistical matchup and see how the teams stack up against one another and where they rank nationally in the major categories.

How They Got Here

Oklahoma Sooners (48-7)
The Sooners took care of business in the Norman Regional, outscoring opponents 31-3 over three games:

  • Oklahoma 8, Boston 0 (F/5)
  • Oklahoma 11, California 2 (F/5)
  • Oklahoma 12, California 1 (F/5)

Patty Gasso’s team is finding its stride again, with balanced offense, sharp defense, and a pitching staff that’s found a groove behind Sam Landry.

Alabama Crimson Tide (40-21)
The Tide survived a dogfight in the Tuscaloosa Regional, pulling off two straight one-run wins against Virginia to advance:

  • Alabama 8, Jackson State 0 (F/5)
  • Alabama 4, Virginia Tech 3
  • Alabama 3, Virginia Tech 2

Alabama’s been up-and-down all season but showed serious grit against a tough Virginia Tech squad. With Audrey Vandagriff leading the offense, and the Tide’s pitching staff throwing the best they have all season, this is a formidable foe for anyone left in the field, including Oklahoma.

Norman Super Regional: Prediction

Oklahoma is built for this stage, and they’re peaking at the right time. Despite their inexperience, the Sooners’ talent and power is shining through on offense—and if they can get enough from the arms behind Landy, she should be able to carry them through tough stretches.

Alabama, on the other hand, has already gotten the better of the Sooners this season, taking them down in a three-game series back in April, when the Crimson Tide held Oklahoma to its two worst offensive games of the season.

That series was played in Tuscaloosa, however, and with the Tide hitting the road to Norman this week, things will look a lot different—especially considering Alabama is just 8-9 on the road this year.

Prediction: Oklahoma in two. The Sooners punch their ticket to OKC for the ninth straight year.
