Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson has all the talent in the world, but he showed some young quarterback mistakes in 2024.
Heading into 2025, Kansas State has all the pieces on the table for a Big 12 title run, and one anonymous Big 12 coach believes Johnson can be a ‘Heisman-level guy’ this fall for the Wildcats.
“Avery could be a superstar, a Heisman-level guy, but they’ve got to build up the talent around him,” the anonymous coach told Athlon Sports. “This could be one of the best and most creative offenses in the country this season if he continues to improve.”
One of the biggest questions for Kansas State is the change at offensive coordinator for the third consecutive season, with Johnson at the helm. The Kansas native started his career with Collin Klein calling the plays, then OL coach Conor Riley, and now, quarterbacks coach Matt Wells.
Johnson has some familiarity with Wells, however, as he arrived at Kansas State last season to be the main quarterbacks coach in Manhattan, and the pair hit it off quickly. Many believe that Wells had the opportunity to call plays in Kansas State’s 44-41 win over Rutgers in the Rate Bowl, though that remains unconfirmed.
“The defense is solid, but the offense could carry them to the playoff,” another coach said.
Needless to say, this fall could be a big one for Avery Johnson and Kansas State.
