Preview magazine season is here as we roll into June, and college football fans begin to set their eyes on the things to come in the year ahead.
Along with Phil Steele and Lindy’s, Athlon Sports has made a name for itself as one of the giants in the preview magazine business, cementing itself as a mainstay on grocery store shelves across the nation.
This magazine, in particular, has long featured a segment during this part of the season in which they ask coaches anonymously about the other schools in their league.
It’s here where we’ll take a look at what one Big 12 coach has to say about the Kansas Jayhawks.
Lance Leipold’s group is coming off a 5-7 campaign, which gave them a 10th-place finish in the Big 12 Conference. They were one of the biggest disappointments of the 2024 season, as many expected them to be in contention for a Big 12 title.
Now, the path forward is a little tricky, and other coaches are taking note.
“On paper, they’re not a top-end team in the league,” one Big 12 coach said. “They’re replacing a lot at receiver, tight end, and linebacker, but this program gets the most out of what they’ve got.”
Leipold is entering his fifth season at Kansas and has been one of the best hires in the history of Kansas football. For the first time in ages, the Jayhawks have preseason expectations, and it feels like just a matter of time until it clicks for good in Lawrence.
“I wouldn’t pick against Lance when they’re bringing back a veteran quarterback with a really solid line and a good defense,” another coach echoed.
Kansas will open the 2025 season on Saturday, August 23rd, against the Fresno State Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m. central.
