2026 Prospect Marcus Zelee No Longer Committed to Iowa State

Austin product Marcus Zelee, a three-star point guard in the Class of 2026, has reopened his recruitment by de‑committing from Iowa State just weeks after pledging to the Cyclones on July 2.

The news was first reported by On3, which confirmed that Zelee will explore other options moving forward.

At 6-foot-2, Zelee had initially chosen Iowa State over offers from Arizona State and Drake, citing a strong connection with the coaching staff. He called ISU a place that “felt like home,” adding that he embraced the program’s culture. Known for his defensive-minded, high-energy style, Zelee was praised for his intensity and team-first approach.

His departure leaves the Cyclones with just two remaining commits in the 2026 class: four-star shooting guard Christian Wiggins and three-star Yusef Gray Jr. Zelee’s exit tightens Coach T.J. Otzelberger’s room and puts greater emphasis on retaining and building around the current core.

Zelee described himself as a “hard-nosed” defender who operates as the team’s engine, willing to accept any role to help win. Those attributes were a primary reason ISU extended the offer. Now, with his recruitment back open, schools seeking a tenacious lead guard will likely be in contact this summer.

For Iowa State, this development may signal a shift in recruiting strategy. With roster spots limited, finding a point guard who fits Zelee’s energy and defensive intensity becomes even more critical. The search is officially back on.
