Fans Will Get Their First Look at Cleveland’s New Quarterback

Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders takes a snap during minicamp, Tuesday, June 10, 2025, in Berea.

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders will get the start in the team’s first preseason game, the Browns announced this week.

The fifth round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft will lead the offense when Cleveland opens its exhibition schedule, giving fans their first live look at the former Colorado star in professional action.

Sanders arrives in Cleveland after two standout seasons under his father, head coach Deion Sanders, at Colorado. Known for his poise, accuracy, and ability to operate in high-pressure situations, Sanders threw for over 6,900 yards and 56 touchdowns during his time in Boulder. His leadership and football IQ were among the traits that made him one of the top quarterback prospects in last year’s draft class.

Starting the preseason opener provides Sanders with a valuable opportunity to acclimate to the speed and complexity of the NFL game. Head coach Kevin Stefanski noted the importance of getting his young quarterback live reps with the first-team offense, even if the series will be limited.

Cleveland has high expectations for Sanders, who is seen as the future face of the franchise. The Browns believe his quick decision-making and accuracy fit their offensive scheme, and his development will be one of the key storylines of training camp.

For Sanders, the debut will also be a chance to showcase the skills that made him a college football standout and a player to watch early on. While preseason results are often measured in growth rather than wins, the game will mark an important step in his transition to the NFL.

Cleveland opens its preseason schedule with a matchup that will give Sanders an immediate test against pro-level defenses, a challenge that could set the tone for his rookie season.
