Bear Bachmeier is trending toward becoming BYU’s starting quarterback this fall, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.
The true freshman transfer from Stanford has made a strong impression through the first two weeks of camp and is now seen as the leader in what was originally a wide-open quarterback battle.
The Cougars began fall camp with three options under center: Bachmeier, Utah State transfer McCae Hillstead, and returner Treyson Bourguet. Offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick quickly narrowed the group, giving most of the first-team reps to Bachmeier and Hillstead. Bourguet has fallen behind, and unless something changes, the decision will come down to the two transfers.
Bachmeier’s rise has been rapid. Despite having zero college experience, he has been praised for his command of the offense and quick grasp of BYU’s playbook. Roderick said the freshman is doing a good job getting the ball out quickly, avoiding sacks, and showing the poise of a much older quarterback. The offensive staff has not named a starter, but the buzz surrounding Bachmeier continues to grow.
While Bachmeier could be a promising solution, the situation was never expected to unfold this way. Jake Retzlaff was originally projected to return as the starter, but was suspended indefinitely earlier this summer and has since left the program for Tulane. That opened the door for a new face to take over, and Bachmeier has stepped into that role with confidence.
If he wins the job, Bachmeier would become the first redshirt freshman to start a game for BYU at quarterback since Jaren Hall in 2019. With Big 12 play looming and an unsettled offensive identity, the Cougars appear to be betting on long-term upside.
Bachmeier has not been named the starter yet, but every sign points toward him taking the first snap when BYU opens the 2025 season.
