Tulane Just Made a Key Decision at Quarterback

NCAA Football: Brigham Young at Baylor

Tulane has named former BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff as its starter for Week One, giving the Green Wave some early-season definition at the most important position.

The announcement came Friday, with Tulane confirming that Retzlaff will take the first snap in Saturday’s opener against Northwestern. It’s a notable decision considering Iowa transfer Brendan Sullivan was also in the mix and is reportedly healthy enough to contribute in situational roles. For Tulane, settling the quarterback competition early sends a clear message about where the staff sees the highest ceiling.

Retzlaff brings a proven track record of experience to the role. Last season at BYU, he threw for just under 3,000 yards and added 20 passing touchdowns, along with six more scores on the ground. While his departure from Provo was complicated by off-field issues, the on-field production never wavered. Now in New Orleans, he leads a transfer-heavy quarterback room in the Group of Five.

This is more than a routine announcement. Tulane is signaling stability in a position that often defines early momentum. With Retzlaff at the controls, the Green Wave is betting on experience and upside. For Big 12 eyes watching outside the league, this decision helps set the tone for what kind of Tulane team might emerge in 2025.
