Rex Ryan is never one to mince words, and on Monday, he set his sights on Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders with a pointed, passionate critique that called into question Sanders’ leadership and preparation.
During an appearance on ESPN, Ryan ripped into Sanders’ public persona, saying the former Colorado standout talks too much and hasn’t earned the NFL credibility he’s trying to project.
“This kid talks and he runs his mouth,” Ryan said. “Like he said, ‘I can be a starting quarterback’ with his arms crossed like this. Get your ass in the front row and study and do all that. If I know, the whole league knows. Quit being an embarrassment that way. You’ve got the talent to be the quarterback; you should be. You should be embarrassed that you’re not the quarterback now.”
The comments came in response to Sanders’ recent viral remarks about being ready to start in the NFL right now. While some see that as confidence, Ryan took it as immaturity, suggesting that Sanders is relying on flash and bravado rather than grinding through the preparation expected of a top-level quarterback.
To be fair, Ryan also acknowledged Sanders’ ability. “You’ve got the talent,” he said. That part isn’t in question. Sanders put up impressive numbers at Colorado last season, even behind a porous offensive line and in a high-pressure spotlight. But Ryan’s larger point focused on the idea that talent without discipline doesn’t move the needle in the NFL, and Sanders’ comments and posture haven’t reflected the humility Ryan believes is required.
This kind of criticism isn’t new for players with hype, especially those surrounded by off-field storylines and brand-building. What makes it different here is that Ryan went straight at Sanders’ attitude, not just his film. It’s a shot across at a young quarterback who carries the name, the talent, and the social media spotlight, while still waiting to prove it all on the professional stage.
