The Cowboys’ defense just took a major hit.
Oklahoma State defensive lineman De’Marion Thomas is expected to redshirt for the remainder of the 2025 season, a development that insiders say is particularly damaging. On3’s Brett McMurphy even dubbed Thomas Oklahoma State’s “best defensive lineman,” which is particularly notable considering the update.
Thomas arrived in Stillwater after transferring from Vanderbilt, where he made an impact across two seasons. During his time at OSU, he was viewed as a foundational piece on the interior line, someone who could anchor the run defense and generate interior pressure. Losing him for the season not only subtracts from the talent pool but also forces the defensive staff to re-adjust depth, rotation, and schematic options.
From a strategic standpoint, Thomas’ absence complicates things for interim coach Doug Meacham. Backup defensive linemen will need to step into more high-leverage roles, and Oklahoma State may have to lean more heavily on defensive ends or hybrid fronts to account for the void inside. In short yardage and power run downs, that missing anchor can be felt immediately.
It’s also a psychological blow. When you lose someone viewed by observers as “your best defensive lineman,” it sends a ripple through the locker room. Confidence, line calls, and third-down positioning are all affected. The internal message to younger players now becomes: not only do you have to fill the spot, but you have to prove that you can do it effectively under pressure.
If the Cowboys aim to remain competitive in the Big 12, the weeks ahead will be among their most challenging tests. The conference is loaded with explosive offenses that seek to push the line with tempo and gap pressure. Without Thomas, Oklahoma State’s interior defense may be more vulnerable to inside runs, double teams, and interior push schemes.
Of course, this is not a finished story. The degree of adjustment the team makes, the performance of the next men up, and the coaching tweaks will matter just as much as the loss. But the fact remains: Thomas was supposed to be a difference maker in 2025. Now he’s sitting, and the Cowboys will have to find a way to survive without him.
