Oklahoma State sophomore safety David Kabongo is planning to enter the NCAA transfer portal, sources report. Kabongo’s decision comes in the wake of major changes in Stillwater’s program, including the firing of long-time head coach Mike Gundy, which triggered a 30-day window for players to explore new opportunities.
Kabongo joined the Cowboys after a standout high school career and saw meaningful action even as a true freshman. In 2024, he played in the final seven games, racking up 20 tackles (17 solo) and delivering a high-impact play with a sack on Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders that helped force a punt. He also recorded seven tackles in the Colorado game, becoming the first OSU true freshman in recent seasons to post that many in one contest.
Behind the scenes, the decision to transfer is viewed by some insiders as tied to the program’s uncertainty. With Gundy’s departure and an open coaching search ahead, several players are said to be evaluating where they can maximize playing time, scheme fit, and stability.
For Oklahoma State, losing Kabongo deepens the questions already facing the secondary. Dylan Smith, another OSU veteran on the back end, also elected to enter the transfer portal. The departures leave younger, less proven players to step into roles that demand both experience and consistency.
As with all portal moves, this is not yet finalized. Kabongo is “planning” to enter, meaning he may also reconsider depending on how the coaching staff evolves and what opportunities present themselves, though it’s not exactly very likely. For now, the Cowboys must prepare for shifts not just in leadership but on the roster itself.
