With Texas Tech and Houston set to kick off on Saturday night in H-Town, Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt decided to have some fun on social media this week, at the expense of the Cougars. Hocutt put out a post on X trolling Houston, suggesting that the Red Raiders will really be playing another home game on Saturday night when they go on the road to take on Houston at TDECU Stadium.
Here’s the post from Hocutt.
Personally, I love the trash talking. The Big 12 Conference needs more of it with so many of their former top rivalries long gone. While the league still has BYU vs. Utah, Arizona vs. Arizona State, Kansas vs. K-State, and Farmageddon (oh, wait… the Big 12 actually canceled that one), the more rivalries that can build going forward, the better off this league will be.
Texas Tech and Houston go back to their time in the Southwest Conference, which they were in together for over 20 years. Texas Tech joined the Southwest Conference in 1958 from the Border Conference, while the University of Houston joined for the 1976 season, the same year it won the football championship. Both universities’ histories in the SWC ended with the conference’s disbandment in 1996, with Texas Tech joining the Big 12 Conference.
The two teams didn’t play in 2024, but in 2023, Houston’s first season in the Big 12, the Red Raiders won 49-28. In fact, Texas Tech has won six in a row in this match up, with Houston’s last win coming in a 29-28 victory back in 2009.
Texas Tech vs. Houston kicks off at 6:00 p.m. CT on ESPN.
