Texas Tech’s injury report got a bit more complicated after its win over Kansas. Head coach Joey McGuire revealed that defensive tackle Skyler Gill‑Howard is “a little bit more questionable” than quarterback Behren Morton.

McGuire said Gill‑Howard had his leg “whipped” by a teammate during a play, and while the initial X-rays were negative, the issue still concerned the staff enough to tape his ankle and eventually place him in a walking boot. He’s being sent “to an expert in Dallas” to determine exactly what’s going on and how quickly they can get him back.

Morton’s injury, meanwhile, isn’t being viewed with the same level of skepticism. McGuire said Morton is dealing with a leg issue (similar to a prior hyperextension), and though he left the game, the focus now is on how to manage and recover, rather than assume an extended absence.

Here’s how this plays out in the bigger picture: offense versus defense, impact, and margin for error. The Red Raiders’ offense is built around Morton’s leadership, read progression, and timing. If he’s available, even at less than 100 percent, Tech still maintains its core structure. But losing Gill‑Howard, even briefly, could sap some of that punch up front on defense, especially in run support and interior pressure.

McGuire’s move to send Gill‑Howard to an expert suggests the team is acting cautiously, not recklessly. He clearly views the injury as something worth investigating thoroughly. That’s smart. You can’t rush linemen back, especially in a conference where fronts win games.

The next 48 hours will be crucial. If the specialist’s evaluations are favorable, Gill‑Howard might rejoin sooner than expected. If not, Tech’s depth at tackle will be tested. But as of now, Morton’s status still looks to have less risk, and Tech’s momentum isn’t threatened, unless both parts of their engine stall.

For now, Red Raider fans should hope the Dallas trip yields clarity and no surprises.
