It’s been over a full year since Oklahoma left the Big 12 Conference, and once they left, I thought I would never have to bring them up ever again on this platform.
Yet, here we are in the middle of the 2025 football season, and the Sooners are making headlines all across Big 12 country despite being in the SEC.
During a recent press conference, Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables was asked about playing tight games in the SEC. And his response was, “This isn’t the old Big 12 days where Oklahoma destroys everybody every single week except one game of the year.”
It would be one thing if Bob Stoops or even Lincoln Riley said that, as the two have 14 conference titles between them. But Brent Venables? He’s got as many conference titles as a head coach as I do, which, for those counting at home, is a big fat zero.
Now I get it, Brent was on Oklahoma’s staff from 1999 to 2011 under Bob Stoops, where the Sooners won 7 Big 12 titles. But again, that was under Bob Stoops.
Brent Venables has been the head coach at Oklahoma since 2022, and his first two seasons were in the Big 12, where he had a conference record of 10-8 with zero Big 12 title game appearances. And it appears that some people in the state of Oklahoma didn’t like the fact that the Big 12 brought up his record during his time in the conference.
But what the Big 12 said was also not inaccurate.
I find it hilarious that the Oklahoma media is losing its mind when all the Big 12 did was point out a simple fact. Not a lie or an opinion, a 100% fact.
If the Big Ten or SEC tweeted out a fact like this, then people probably wouldn’t have given this the time of day. But when the Big 12 does it? All hell breaks loose.
It’s like when a school bully gets punched in the face and then cries for help. I mean, what did you think was going to happen? This isn’t the Bob Bowlsby-run Big 12 anymore, Oklahoma. It’s not going to tolerate being disrespected by a coach who hasn’t won shit as a head coach.
Maybe Brent should focus more on fixing his 13-15 conference record since taking over or his 3-7 record in SEC play. Or how about simply beating Texas? Instead, he’s reminiscing about the good old days, bringing up the Big 12, which his school decided to leave, by the way.
Enjoy the SEC money, enjoy Paul Finebaum and the constant blowing that ESPN gives you daily. But maybe you should think twice about bringing up the Big 12 due to the fact that you didn’t win a damn thing as a head coach while you were in it.
