Offensive Player of the Week
Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson and Houston quarterback Conner Weigman were named in the Offensive Player of the Week category for Week 8.
Tyson managed to make 10 catches for a total of 105 yards and a touchdown as he helped Arizona beat the then-#7 Texas Tech before the ratings were updated. He made several plays, including a huge 33-yard catch on their game-winning drive at the end of the game. Tyson’s been exceptional this season, as he has a touchdown in his last eight games.
Weigman earned his honors as he became the first Houston quarterback with three passing touchdowns, a rushing touchdown and at least 95 yards on the ground in a game since Kevin Kolb in 2003. His 98 rushing yards were a high in his career.
Defensive Player of the Week
Kaleb Elarms-Orr earned Defensive Player of the Week honors after he recorded 16 total tackles in TCU’s game against Baylor. He tied for the second-most across the Big 12 this season, and had three more than any other player in the conference in Week 8.
Tanner Wall became the first player for BYU to earn a weekly honor on defense this season, having recorded 10 tackles in their win over then-#23 Utah. Along with the season-high, he also had a key interception in the fourth quarter that set up BYU’s final scoring drive.
Special Teams Player of the Week
Jesus Gomez’s name had already appeared twice this season, making Week 8 the third time. The Arizona State kicker would go 4-for-4 on field goals, making it his second match in which four field goals were made. He also became the first kicker in College Football this season to make four against a Top-25 team.
Ethan Sanchez hit his second game-winning field goal this weekend from 41 yards as time expired to give Houston the win over Arizona. He also had a 100% record for PATs, making it 21-for-21 this season.
Freshman of the Week
The Freshman of the Week honor went to BYU’s Bear Bachmeier. The quarterback threw for 166 yards and a score while rushing for 64 yards and a touchdown without committing a turnover in their 24-21 win over Utah.
Offensive Line of the Week
Houston’s offensive line was recognized for its performance in Week 8, as they allowed the team to achieve 396 offensive yards. In addition, they did not allow a sack on the day, with 232 yards being rushed; a record-high for the team in a Big 12 game.
