The coaching carousel just started spinning a little early in Waco. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Baylor offensive line coach Mason Miller is no longer with the program. The move comes in the middle of a rocky stretch for the Bears and feels like the kind of midseason shakeup that’s more about sending a message, yet it’s vague who elected to move on from whom here.
Miller had been in Waco for two seasons after coming over from Tarleton State, where he called plays and helped run one of the more aggressive offensive approaches in FCS ball. At Baylor, he was brought in to stabilize the trenches, develop some young guys, and give this offense a more physical identity. It just never really got there. The line has been inconsistent all year, protection has been shaky, and the run game has gone missing in key moments. At some point, something had to give, and it turns out Miller was that something.
You don’t see a lot of in-season coaching moves like this unless the vibes are off or the progress is non-existent. Baylor’s sitting at 4-4 right now, with a 2-3 mark in Big 12 play, and they just got beat by Cincinnati. Simply put: they just look bad. And when things look bad, changes happen. This one feels like the staff trying to spark something before the season gets away from them completely.
Miller’s a well-respected guy in coaching circles, and he’s been around the block a few times. From Washington State to Mississippi State and now Baylor, he’s coached under big names and within big schemes. But for whatever reason, it just didn’t click here. That doesn’t mean he won’t land somewhere else and make an impact. It just means Baylor needs a new voice in that room right now.
With Miller out, the Bears will need to rally quickly. Offensive line play is one of those things you don’t notice until it’s going wrong, and it’s been going wrong a lot in 2025. Whether they promote someone from within or bring in a new name after the season, this is a spot that needs real answers. Because if Baylor wants to stop spinning its wheels on offense, it has to start in the trenches.
