Gus Johnson Just Gave Bear Bachmeier an ELITE Nickname

NCAA Football: Utah at Brigham Young

BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier just picked up some national attention this week, courtesy of FOX Sports’ Gus Johnson. The longtime play-by-play voice dropped Bachmeier into his weekly “Got It Team,” complete with a hype video and a brand-new nickname, “Bear Force One.”

It’s loud, it’s dramatic, and it’s exactly the kind of thing that signals you’re making noise outside the Big 12 bubble.

The moment came after Bachmeier’s big Week 9 showing, and whether you think the nickname sticks or not, one thing is clear: BYU’s got a quarterback who’s starting to draw national eyes. That’s not something this program has had often, and certainly not in its short time as a Big 12 member. This isn’t about NIL campaigns or jersey sales. It’s about one of the biggest voices in college football putting a spotlight on a guy who looks like the real deal.

Bachmeier’s got tools. He’s got the poise, the arm, and now apparently the branding. And while that might not matter in the box score, it does matter in a league trying to elevate its perception. BYU came into the Big 12 with expectations, and they’ve more than proven their worth. Having a quarterback who shows up in hype reels and national conversation helps build that case.

The “Bear Force One” clip wasn’t just fluff, either. It came with highlights, rollout throws, and a whole lot of confidence. Gus doesn’t hand that kind of praise out unless he sees something worth circling. And for BYU, this is exactly what you want at this point in the season, a quarterback with momentum and a program that’s finally starting to build some national edge.

Of course, nicknames don’t win games. Bachmeier still has to show he can stack performances and finish drives. The hype is fun, but consistency is what BYU needs if they’re going to climb into the College Football Playoff. Still, it’s pretty damn cool of Gus Johnson to make the statement.
