College GameDay hasn’t officially announced where they’re headed next week, but Rece Davis might’ve let the cat out of the bag. During this week’s show, the longtime host dropped a pretty clear hint about the crew’s possible destination, saying, “I don’t wanna give away any secrets here, and I know it’s against the rules now, but I might be stocking up on tortillas in a couple of weeks for GameDay.”
If you know, you know. There’s only one fanbase in college football famous for tossing tortillas before kickoff, and that’s Texas Tech. So naturally, Red Raiders fans are fired up and speculating that next week’s home game in Lubbock could be the one that brings GameDay back into Big 12 territory, for good.
The matchup itself is plenty worthy. Both teams have played themselves into the thick of the College Football Playoff race, and the winner of this one likely stays in the conversation through November. BYU remains undefeated and continues to prove it belongs among the nation’s best. Texas Tech, meanwhile, is trying to stack wins and remind everyone why they were one of the preseason favorites to make a run at Arlington. It might not have the national name-brand pull of some SEC showdowns, but within Big 12 circles, this one matters.
More importantly, this would be a huge look for the league. GameDay has already announced it plans to be at Cincinnati vs. Utah in Salt Lake City this week, and back-to-back stops at Big 12 venues would do wonders for the league. The league’s power structure has shifted, and teams like BYU and Tech are right in the middle of it.
There’s still no official word, and as always with GameDay, things can change depending on how this weekend shakes out. But if Rece Davis is out here name-dropping tortillas, you’ve got to think there’s at least some truth to the buzz. And if that’s the case, Lubbock is about to be on full display next Saturday.
