Texas Tech’s Offense Just Got a Whole Lot More Interesting

NCAA Football: Texas Tech at North Carolina State

Texas Tech is getting a big piece of its offense back this week as Terrance Carter Jr. is expected to return against Kansas State. The junior tight end has missed the last two games after going down with a lower leg injury in the Arizona State matchup, but he’s good to go in Manhattan and should slot right back into a featured role in the passing game.

Before the injury, Carter was one of the most productive tight ends in the Big 12. He’s got 23 catches for 297 yards and five touchdowns on the year, and he’s been a more than reliable red-zone threat. For a team that’s been dealing with injuries at quarterback and across the offensive line, getting a guy like Carter back on the field matters.

His absence was felt immediately. Tech’s offense hasn’t had the same balance without him, and the run game hasn’t been nearly as effective with defenses loading up more often. Carter isn’t just a pass-catcher; he’s a guy who forces teams to think twice about their coverage, especially in short-yardage spots. You can’t just key on the receivers when No. 11 is out there running seam routes.

For Behren Morton and this offense to have a shot at staying in rhythm, Carter needs to be involved early and often. Kansas State’s defense has been tough all year, especially at home, and Tech won’t have much room for error in a game like this. But Carter’s return adds a layer that this offense has been missing.

Texas Tech has a huge task ahead against a surging Kansas State, but getting Carter back gives them a better shot at emerging victorious. He’s not a cure-all, but he’s one of the most consistent pieces they’ve got. And now he’s back when they need him most.
