The Playoff Rankings Just Sent a Message About the Big 12

NCAA Football: Brigham Young at Iowa State

The month of November brings many things in the world of college sports. College football, the start of college basketball begins, and then, of course, we get the College Football Playoff rankings every Tuesday night.

There have been plenty of head-scratching moments from the playoff committee on a weekly basis, so I thought it would be fun to share my three thoughts on this week’s playoff rankings. Here are the Big 12 teams that made the cut.

Three Big 12 Teams Make the Top 13

No. 7 – BYU

No. 8 – Texas Tech

No. 13 – Utah

In the history of the college football playoff, I can’t ever remember a time when we saw three teams from the Big 12 crack the top 13. Sure, we have had a team or two make the top ten, but three teams? Plus, with the way the schedules are set up, it would not shock me at all for these three schools (BYU, Tech, and Utah) to remain in the top 13. The loser of the BYU/Texas Tech game this weekend will get pushed back, but not too far, considering the matchup. And with Utah’s remaining schedule, I like their chances of winning out as well. It was very refreshing to see if you are a Big 12 fan.

Could We See Multiple Big 12 Teams in the Playoff?

This seems to be the million-dollar question every single year. In years past, the conference has struggled to get two teams in the top half of the rankings, and it’s rare to see three teams in the top 15. But with the chaos going on everywhere, there is a window of opportunity here for the Big 12 in more than one way. If BYU wins out in the regular season, they will be in no matter what. However, if a team like Tech or Utah can make it to Jerry World and knock off the Cougars, then there is a really good chance for the conference to get two teams in for the first time in history. One could even make a case for three teams to even get in, but that may be a stretch for now.

More SEC Bias

The playoff committee favors the SEC? I, for one, am shocked. Of course, I’m kidding because we have seen it every single week since this whole thing started. I actually have no issue with Texas A&M, Alabama, Ole Miss, or even Georgia in the top ten. Texas and Oklahoma in the top 12 is a little much, but even still, I don’t have a major issue there. In fact, I think we could see some major changes that won’t go in the SEC’s favor as the weeks go on.

However, can someone explain to me why Tennessee is ranked? The Vols are the only three-loss team in the Top 25, but the biggest question is who in the hell have they beaten? They have played three games against ranked opponents and have lost every single one of them, and two of them were in Knoxville. On paper, their best win is against a 5-4 Mississippi State team on the road.
