Following his decision to take a leave of absence from Baylor University, Mack Rhoades will step down from the College Football Playoff Selection Committee, per Ross Dellenger.
Rhoades, who has served as Baylor’s athletic director since 2016, joined the university after a brief stint at Missouri during the 2015-16 academic year.
He also held previous AD roles at Akron (2006–09) and Houston (2009–15). With Rhoades stepping away, the CFP Selection Committee is now down to 11 members, after previously operating with 13.
“The CFP has not determined a new chair of the committee or if it will replace Rhoades,” Dellenger said via X.
He also noted it was significant that Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel will remain on the committee.
According to ESPN, he will also be replaced as the CFP chair.
A sideline incident involving Rhoades and Baylor tight end Michael Trigg occurred during the Sept. 20 game against Arizona State; however, there has been no confirmation that the incident is connected to his leave. Rhoades has not publicly disclosed his reasons for stepping away from Baylor or the CFP committee.
However, multiple reports indicate the university received additional allegations on Monday, while Rhoades’ leave was officially attributed to “personal reasons.”
Rhoades’ departure creates a possible vacancy at a critical time for both Baylor and the College Football Playoff Selection Committee.
As of now, no timeline has been given for when or if Rhoades will return to his role at Baylor. Meanwhile, the CFP must determine how it will move forward as the postseason draws near.
