Another Big 12 School Could be a Landing Spot for Sam Leavitt: Report

NCAA Football: Arizona State at Baylor

While the 2025 college football season is still in full swing, the world of college football is as such that some top players are already being talked about as transfer portal prospects. Unfortunately for Arizona State, that’s where star quarterback Sam Leavitt found himself on Tuesday as reports surfaced that he was exploring a move to the portal.

And then, a follow-up report in The Athletic shared that another Big 12 school could be a landing spot for Leavitt. The report notes, “The school source told The Athletic that Miami and Texas Tech are two potential destinations for Leavitt. Both have starting quarterbacks (Carson Beck and Behren Morton) who are in their final year of eligibility, and both have shown willingness in past cycles to spend big in the portal for players at positions of need.”

Now, the report goes on to note that a Texas Tech source has denied any interest in Leavitt. And it’s well known that Will Hammond, a former four-star recruit, has proven to be a solid back up this season to Morton and is considered the heir apparent. However, his season was cut short due to a knee injury. Morton is currently under a two-year revenue-sharing contract with Texas Tech.

The news broke on Tuesday from On3’s Steve Wiltfong and Pete Nakos that Leavitt’s camp is “actively shopping” the sophomore quarterback at a high level, and his return to Tempe in 2026 is looking doubtful.

That said, shortly after the report dropped, Leavitt’s brother, Dallin, shared a text sent to On3’s Pete Nakos calling his report “a joke”.

Leavitt, a former four-star out of Oregon who transferred in from Michigan State, was incredible during his first season in Tempe, leading his squad to the College Football Playoff and winning the Big 12 Championship. Entering the 2025 season, Leavitt was dubbed one of the best quarterbacks in the conference and was already generating serious NFL buzz. Since then, injuries have taken their toll, as Leavitt was ruled out for the rest of the season earlier this month due to a foot injury.

On the field, Arizona State is set to take on Colorado on the road in Week 13, with Jeff Sims leading the team at quarterback. Sims has led the Sun Devils to two-straight wins against Iowa State and West Virginia.
