The Big 12 is mopping the floor with the ACC and SEC on the hardwood, and nobody seems to want to talk about it. Heading into today’s matchups, the conference holds a combined 20-6 record against those two supposed basketball blueblood leagues.
Let’s start with the ACC. Duke and North Carolina do a TON of heavy lifting in the conference, and after that, it’s a pretty steep drop off. Louisville is surging under Pat Kelsey, and a few other teams in the league will have their moments, but it’s similar to what the SEC is in football: top-heavy.
The SEC isn’t any better. Outside of Kentucky, occasionally pretending it’s still 2012, what are we looking at? Alabama plays offense like it’s a YouTube mixtape, and Florida, the defending National Champions, just got smacked by TCU of all teams! The Big 12 isn’t just surviving these non-con games; they’re imposing their will.
It’s easy to get caught up in the allure of SEC or ACC Basketball, but make no mistake, the Big 12 is the greatest conference in college basketball. Whether it’s Kansas grinding out wins without their best player, Arizona dominating opponents, or Houston turning games into dogfights, it’s a different level of pressure.
And it’s not just the bluebloods! Teams like Texas Tech, BYU, and even Iowa State have piled up quality wins over these SEC and ACC schools that were supposedly going to out-athlete them. Instead, they walked into the gym and put on clinics.
So yeah, maybe it’s time for the talking heads to stop pretending this is all some cute early-season storyline. The Big 12 isn’t just the deepest league in college basketball; it’s the best. Full stop. The ACC and SEC can keep polishing their trophies from a decade ago. The Big 12 is out here earning respect one win at a time, and right now, they’re the ones setting the tone for the rest of the sport.
